Well, Saint John was inundated last week with children’s book aficionados, thanks to the Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book Award, honouring Canadian and Atlantic Canadian authors of fiction and non-fiction for kids.
@kapybara and I were thrilled to have the chance to meet nominee @HeleneBoudreau (author of ACADIAN STAR) and winner “Doubting” David Acer (author of GOTCHA! 18 WAYS TO FREAK OUT YOUR FRIENDS). We basically pumped them for details on all things publishing and agent-y. Thanks guys, even if we’re not waving posters and screaming like middle-graders, we’ll always be your groupies.
Also had the opportunity to have a lovely chat with several librarians involved in organizing the Hackmatack festivities, which culminated in the award ceremony at Saint John High on May 14th.
Here’s an excerpt from their press release:
The Hackmatack Award ceremony was the culmination of this year’s award week, during which 16 of the nominated Canadian authors visited participating schools and libraries in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Thousands of children from grades four to six participated this year by reading the 40 nominated books.
What a great program. Thanks to everyone involved.
